What We Do
Sun House is a 9 bedroom emergency shelter, serving people who are homeless and have behavioral health issues. The Sun House has been helping people with behavioral health issues since 1975. We are a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to helping people reclaim their lives.
Sun Community Service has been providing post-crisis emergency housing and permanent supported housing for people with serious, chronic behavioral health issues since 1975.
People living at Sun House are provided food for all meals and snacks. People working at Sun House cook a large evening meal, and work with consumers to prepare their own breakfast and lunch.
There is always someone to talk to, help with medications, and provide support. Our trained staff are on-duty 24 hours a day.
The environment of the Sun House is different from other agencies.
- We believe a warm, homelike place to live is more supportive than environments based on a medical model.
- We believe people should have choices in their care, from basic things like when to eat and when to sleep, to what goals they want to work on, and how they'd like to work on them.
- We believe people benefit from having someone to talk to, day or night, when they can't sleep, or are anxious and frightened.
Since the opening of our post-crisis emergency shelter, Sun House has:
- helped over 1250 people who are homeless and have a mental illness
- Served 131,400 meals
- Provided 43,800 nights of safe sleep... and counting.
People with behavioral health issues are often treated differently in our
culture.
Sometimes they are ignored.
Sometimes they can’t participate in the things people without disabilities do, like watch children play at the park or go to the movies, without being stared at, or moved away from, or the people around them being frightened.
Sometimes they are given special positions on committees, have special events arranged for them, are given special services, and are recognized as a special population.
But what they rarely have are everyday lives, lives like yours and mine.
At Sun House, we strive to give everyone an everyday life.
